Influence of Na-Hyaluronan on Keratocyte RE-population during Corneal Alkali Wound Healing.

Abstract
The biological role of topically instilled 1% sodium hyaluronan(Na-HA) on the healing of stroma following alkali wounds was evaluated. A standardized corneal alkali wounds were produced in one eye of 72 albino rabbit by applying a 5.5 mm round filter paper, soaked in 1N NaOH, for 60 seconds. 1% Na-HA in the treatment group and phosphate buffered saline(PBS) in the control group were given 4 times per day for 3 weeks. After treatment, the excised specimens were prepared for histological examinations in EM and LM. Stromal healing was assessed by performing the cell counting for PMN and keratocyte in the wound area. Keratocyte re-population was significantly enhanced around the wound margin in the treatment group at 2 days specimens. Moreover, PMN infiltration was suppressed in the 1% Na-HA treated group at 7 days corneas. These data suggest that topically applied 1% Na-HA provides a positive influence on stromal healing after alkali wound by suppressing PMN infiltration and enhancing keratocyte re-population.
