Abstract
In order to evaluate the efficacy, safety, stability and predictability of LASIK enhancement procedure, we studied for 28 eyes of 20 patients who had more than -1 diopter[D] of refractive error due to myopic regression and undercorrection or less than 0.5 of uncorrected visual acuity after the LASIK and followed up for at least 6 months after enhancement using lifting flap and reablating procedure with MEL-60 excimer laser[Aesculap Meditec, Gemany]. Before LASIK and LASIK enhancement, the mean refractive error[spherical equivalent] was -6.95+/-2.87D, -1.43+/-0.72D and after the enhancement, the mean refractive error was 0.03+/-0.39D[1 week], 0.02+/-0.38D[1M], 0.01+/-0.37D[2M], -0.07+/-0.35D[3M], -0.08+/-0.58D[6M] respectively and refractive error within+/-0.5D was 75% at 3 months[M] and 93% at 6M[within+/-1.0D, 96% and 100%, respectively]. The mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.06+/-0.15 before the LASIK and 0.50+/-0.19 before the LASIK enhancement. After the enhancement, mean uncorrected visual acuity at 1 week, 1, 2, 3, 6M was 0.70+/-0.21, 0.74+/-0.23, 0.81+/-0.16, 0.83+/-0.18, 0.83+/-0.16 respectively and uncorrected visual acuity of 0.5 or better was 93% at 3M and 96% at 6 M[0.8 or better, 79%, 82% respectively]. At 6M after enhancement, the incidence of decreased 2 lines or more of best corrected visual acuity was 10.7% [3 eyes] and the causes were central epithelial ingrowth, button hole formation in corneal flap and significant decentration. There were no more severe intra and postoperative complications associated with LASIK enhancement. In conclusion, we consider that LASIK enhancement is a superiorly efficacious, stable, predictable and a relatively safe procedure for undercorrection and myopic regression after LASIK, but further investigation and long-term studies are needed to confirm it.
