Abstract
We examined the frequency and types of ocular complications in 40 patients who were diagnosed as atopic dermatitis. Mild ocular involvements including blepharitis in 40 eyes[50%], conjunctivitis in 54 eyes[68%], and superficial punctate keratitis in 6 eyes[8%] were seen. More serious ocular complications which may lead to permanent decreased visual function occurred in 66 eyes, which were cataracts in 44 eyes[55%], retinal breaks in 16 eyes[20%], and retinal detachments in 6 eyes[8%]. We found the abnormalities in the peripheral retina including anterior vitreous opacity in 66 eyes[83%] and white without pressure in 20 eyes[25%]. Many of our patients with atopic dermatitis had serious ocular complications in the absence of ocular symptoms. Thus it is important to conduct a thorough ophthalmological examination in the early period of disease in atopic dermatitis patients even without any complaining eye symptoms for the early diagnosis and treatment of serious ocular complications as well as for the preservation of visual function.
