Abstract |
Porous polyethylene(Medpor) implant offers several advantages over other implant materials. Its porosity allows fibrovascular ingrowth which promotes host integration, prevents migration, and reduces the likelihood of opportunistic infections. Retrospective study of 43 cases of orbital fracture repairs using porous polyethylene sheets was performed. A minimum of 3 months follow-up was required for inclusion in this study. To prevent direct contact of the extraocular muscle fibers with the porous polyethylene implants, 0.2, 0.3 or 0.4 mm thickness Supramid foil was interposed in 37 patients. A total of 38 of 43 patients had clinically significant diplopia preoper-atively, and 2 of 43 had postoperative diplopia, None of the five patients with single binocular vision preoperatively developed diplopia postoperatively. Enophthalmos resolved in 22 of 25 patients. The mean amount of enophthalmos correction in 25 patients with preoperative enophthalmos was 2.28mm. There was no serious complication related to the implant. |
