Spontaneous Sterilization in Experimental Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas Endophthalmitis.

Abstract
Staphylococcus epidermjdis (2.0 X 104 CFU/0.1 ml) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (2.0 X 103 CFU/0.1 ml) was inoculated into the vitreous of rabbits. In S. epidermidis endophthalmitis, peak concentrations were 3.9 X 107 CFU/ml on day 2. On the fifth day, three of four cultures were negative. However, clinical symtoms were observed to be worst on the fifth day. In P. aeruginosa endophthalmitis, peak concentrations were 8.9 X 106 CFU/ml at 36 hr. However, culture results showed positive findings persistently until day 15. On the ERG amplitudes of S. epidermidis endophthalmitis started to decrease from day 3 (>24%) until day 5, and then recovered to initial level of amplitude on day 7. Amplitudes of P. aeruginosa endophthalmitis began to decrease after 24 hr (>24%). There was no amplitude on the seventh day. It is clear that significant inflammation continues in the abscence of bacterial proliferation and inflammatory response is dependent upon bacterial virulence. Progression of inflammation despite spontaneous sterilization suggests that control of the inflammatory responses may be as important as killing microorganisms in the treatment of endophthalmitis.
