Abstract

In this experimental study the scleral homograft was performed in 30 albino rabits (16-fullthickness sceleral graft and 14-lamellar graft). The left eye had been operated for the transplantation and the right eye was reserved as It control. The full-thickness eye wall resection was performed including underlying choroid and retina. The size of graft was 6 X 6mm in full-thickness scleral graft and 7 X 7mm. in lamellar scleral graft. The resected area was replaced with a sclera which had preserved in 1 : 1000 zephiran solution for two days. After scleral graft the total eyeballs were enucleated for the interval of 10 days till 90 days. Then the enucleated eyeball was observed by gross and histopathologic examinations. The summarized datas of this experiment are as follows; 1. When the time had elapsed from the operation till the enucleation, the adherence of grafted sclera with the surrounding tissues was very satisfactory in both the full-thickness and lamellar grafted eyes. 2. The inflamatory reactions were more severe in full thickness graft than lamellar graft and vitreous hemorrhage and retinal detachment were more frequently occurred in the full-thickness grafted caess. 3. The depth of stitches in the sclera in full-thickness graft was very important. The deeper the stitches placed in the sclera the larger inflammatory complications developed. Concerning the problem of choosing suture material, the silk suture induced less severe reactions than the catgut suture. 4. The thickness of donor sclera and the depth of recipient's scleral bed were important factors for the determing of prognosis in the lamellar graft.
