Abstract
The effects of intraocular lens(IOL) being inserted by three kind of cataract surgery on the central endothelial cell density(CECD) was studied for one year. The study was performed on 69 eyes of 65 patients and 69 eyes were divided into 3 groups as follows. Group I: Planneq extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens (45 eyes). Group II: Complicated extracapsular cataract extraction with anterior chamber lens(11 eyes). Group III: Secondary anterior chamber lens(13 eyes). The result were as follows; 1. The preperative CECD Was 2.466 +/- 240 cells/mm2 in average and there was no significant difference in CECD between age groups. 2. The preoperative CECD of group III which had cataract surgery previously was lower than group I and II respectively. 3. The endothelial cell loss at 1 week of the postoperative period was 10.87 +/- 9.38% in group III. 4. The endothelial cell loss was remarkable until 3 months of the postoperative priod but it was not significant thereafter. 5. The average postoperative central endothelial cell density of group II and III which had long operation time and repeated surgery was significantly higher than that of group I.
