Abstract |
The time analysis on the changes of the central corneal endothelial cell density (CECD) on both groups(Intercapsular cataract extraction plus PCL and conventional P-ECCE plus PCL) was studied for three months. Group I(N=20) was planned intercapsular(or endocapsular) cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens(PCL) implantation and group II (N=10) as a control was conventional planned extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber lens implantation. During these cataract operations Healon(R) was routinely used on all cases. The results were as follows: 1. The mean preoperative CECD was 2802 +/- 205 cells/mm2(Mean +/- SD) in intercapsular P-ECCE with PCL (group I) and 2894 +/- 170 cells/mm2 in conventional P-ECCE with PCL(group II), there was no significant difference in CECD between two groups(p>0.1). 2. The mean endothelial cell loss at 1 week of the postoperative period was 8.85 +/- 2.98% in group I and 9.2 +/- 2.04 in group II(p>0.1). 3. The mean operation time was 24.6 min in group I and 22.9 min in group II. 4. The mean endothelial cell loss at 1 month of postoperative period was 11.5 +/- 2.7% in group I and 12.2 +/- 1.55% in group II(P>0.1). 5. The endothelial cell loss at 3 months of postoperative period was 13.56 +/- 2.6% in group I and 14.6 +/- 1.66% in group II(p>0.1). |
