A Statistical Study on the Palpebral Fissure in Korean.

Abstract

Measurements of the palpebral fissure dimensions and lid movements were taken in 380 normal Koreans. Measurements of the length and height of the palpebral fissure in 380 Koreans were taken in the primary position. Normal upward excursions of upper and lower lids from full downward to full upward gaze with and without frontalis action were measured in 276 Koreans aged 5 to 76 years. The ages of 380 patients were ranging from 2 months to 76 years and the patients were divided into following four age groups: 1) Under 1 years. 2) 1-10 years 3) 11-60 years. 4) Over 60 years. The results were as follows. 1. In this study, the most common length of the normal palpebral fissure in 250 Koreans over 10 years was 27mm (19.2%) followed by 26mm (17.6%). 28mm (15.2%) and 24mm (12.0%). Of the total 380 patients examined. 316 were between 21 and 29mm in average length. 2. The most common height of the normal palpebral fissure in 302 Koreans over 1 year was 9mm (30.5%)followed by 8mm (22.5%), 10mm (13.6%) and 7mm (13.5%), The average height of the palpebral fissure irrespective of age varied from 5.3 to 12mm. 3. Normal upward excursions of upper and lower lids with and without frontalis action were measured. a) Without frontalis action, 13mm (22.5%) is the most common upward excursion of the normal upper lid and followed by 14mm (19.2%), 15mm (17.0%) and 12mm (11.9%), b) If the frontalis is allowed to act, the most common upward excursion of the normal upper lid is 16mm (21.0%) followed by 15mm (17.8%), 14mm (15.6%) and 17mm (15.6%), c) The extent of lower lid movement was found to be 6mm (30.8%). 7mm (29.0%) and 5mm (23.5%).
