Abstract
Retrospective study of 328 eyes of 248 diabetes with and without diabetic retinopathy among the 3086 eyes which were cataract extracted with and without IOL implantation was done. The 328 eyes were divided into 2 groups; one group was not implanted IOL(group A) and the other one was implanted IOLs(group B), and each group was subdivided into non diabetic retinopathy(Non DR), background diabetic retinopathy(BDR) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR), according to the status of retina. The results were obtained as follows; 1. Incidence of cataract operation in diabetes among all cataract operation is 10.63%. 2. Detected average ages of diabetes is 52.65 yrs old in male, and 63.06 yrs old in females and average duration of diabetes is 9.18 yrs. in both A and B groups. 3. The control methods of diabetes are chiefly diet(45.43%), oral medication(18.60%), and insulin(35.97%) in order. 4. The rate of IOL implantation in A and B groups is 9.9% in 1982, 34.7% in 1983, 38.8% in 1984 and 65.5% in 1985. 5. In A groups(non IOLs) , the mean best corrected visual acuity is 0.53 in Non DR, 0.49 in BDR, 0.34 in PDR, and in B group(IOLs) it is 0.61 in Non DR, 0.60 in BDR, and 0.31 in PDR. And this results are statistically significant in Non DR(p-value=0.023) and BDR(p-value=0.007), but is not statistically significant(p-value=0.723) in PDR.
